Who’s doing deals in Austin?
A new report by two tech industry veterans provides a comprehensive look.
The study was conducted by David Altounian, assistant professor of entrepreneurship at St. Edward’s University and the former founder and CEO of Motion Computing, and Stephen Straus, a serial entrepreneur, Capital Factory partner and former general partner at Austin Ventures.
The report -- Looking for Funds in All the Right Places: The Definitive Guide to Austin Capital -- offers data on a number of categories including: Austin-based VC firms, private equity firms, angel groups and family offices. It also lists firms not based here that are actively doing deals.
It also gives a good overview of venture capital activity from the early days of Austin Ventures, the dot-com boom and today’s current venture landscape.
Among the report’s conclusions is that while Austin’s entrepreneurial ecosystem is vibrant, the region would greatly benefit from more locally-based capital sources: “There are more than enough high-quality startups based here that have to raise their early-stage money outside of the region that could be funded here if there were more firms on the ground.”
