Venture capitalist Peter Thiel cancels on SXSW panel talk

Posted February 12th, 2018

Peter Thiel, the controversial Silicon Valley entrepreneur and venture capitalist, has canceled a scheduled appearance at this year’s South by Southwest.

Thiel was scheduled to appear at 5 p.m. March 10 on a panel titled, “Conspiracy?! Peter Thiel with Author Ryan Holiday,” in which the two would discuss the story behind Holiday’s book, “Conspiracy,” which is set to publish on Feb. 27. The book is about Thiel’s orchestrated take-down of the website Gawker, which SXSW describes on its site as, “a process that involved Hulk Hogan, the FBI, the First and Fourth Amendments and eventually, the next President of the United States.”

Holiday was to interview Thiel in the session. It’s unclear if Thiel has read an advanced copy of the book.

On Monday morning, SXSW told 512tech via email, "We can confirm that Peter Thiel has dropped from SXSW, but we have no further information at this time."

No reason was given for the cancellation; a phone call and email request to Thiel Capital, LLC, have not yet yielded a statement on the billionaire’s latest move. We’ll update this story if a statement or interview is given.
