After more than 25 years at the same location, software firm SAS is moving its 94-acre campus in far Northwest Austin to a new building under way in East Austin, where a rapidly developing office market is emerging just east of downtown.
Rick Whiteley and Richard Whiteley of Cushman & Wakefield’s Austin office are representing SAS in its move to 1801 E. 6th St., where Riverside Resources is building a five-story building that is due to be completed in the first half of 2019. SAS plans to use the roughly 30,000 square foot space on the top floor as a southwest region customer support hub.
SAS, which makes analytics software, is one of the world’s largest software companies. Based in North Carolina, it has more than 14,000 employees and had more than $3 billion in revenue in 2016, according to the company’s website.
Cushman & Wakefield will continue to represent SAS when its existing campus on FM 620 near RM 2222 is put up for sale in the second quarter of 2018.
“For the past few years the east side has experienced a significant increase in multi-family residential, and some limited retail redevelopment,” said Rick Whiteley, executive director of Cushman & Wakefield Austin. “Now we’re seeing a surge in multi-story office space construction, which is expected to bring in more established companies like SAS.”
According to Cushman & Wakefield, nine new office buildings are under construction or planned totaling almost 1 million square feet of space. In addition, five new mixed-use developments are underway or planned; more than 1,300 new residential units are due to be completed by the end of 2019; and the Saltillo mixed-use project now under construction will bring 115,000 square feet of new restaurant and retail space.
