A reader, Gus, writes: “My current AT&T/Yahoo service is so terrible I almost despair at times. For example, sometimes when I have just turned my computer on and opened Internet Explorer, I get a pop-up message ‘Yahoo is not responding due to a long-running script.’ Of course I click on ‘Stop script’ though I have no idea what script is being referred to. I recently downloaded Google's Chrome thinking maybe I could switch to that but I fear this might mean I would have to change my email address. After almost 20 years of using it, it would be a nightmare to notify all the places where I have given that address across the years. I did manage a few years ago to set up a separate Gmail address for my wife, but messages received on it are automatically forwarded to our AT&T/Yahoo/Internet Explorer inbox, though this was set up so long ago I can't now remember how I did that.”
Thanks, Gus! The great thing about having had your email setup on Yahoo so long ago is that it should still be easily accessible from any alterate web browser you use if you go to mail.yahoo.com.
The only hitch is that you’ll have to remember your username and password to get in there. If you can’t remember your password, Yahoo will ask for a way to make sure that it’s really you. That might include sending a message to your phone if there’s a number associated with your account or to a backup email address, such as the gmail one you set up. If the password change email only goes to Yahoo, it might be worth booting up that Internet Explorer one last time to retrieve that recovery email.
In order to change the forwarding settings on Gmail or to see how you have that set up, you can go to mail.google.com on your computer, log in, go to Settings and select “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” in order to turn on, turn off or change automatic email forwarding. Good luck!
