Even for a town obsessed with where to find the best BBQ, the attention might seem a little much.
But Austin, like the rest of world, is not immune to the charms of Nusret Gökçe, a Turkish restaurant owner and butcher who has a way with meats. Gökçe has become a sensation on Twitter in particular for the last few days when a short video of meat cutting and salt sprinkling catapulted the suave meatmonger (who looks a lot like a young Johnny Depp) to sudden stardom.
Nusret, for whom his restaurants are named, has a flair with a knife and a hunk of meat and the Internet went wild trying to find out as much about him. He apparently has nine children and has gotten the attention of celebrities including Bruno Mars since posting a video of himself cutting meat on Jan. 7.
All this might make for short-lived fame, but one measure that Nusret might have staying power is that Bitmoji, the avatar-maker app, has already created one for him, allowing users to don the guise of the smooth salt-dropping meat man.
If you want to go down the rabbit hole of memes, imitations and homages to him, you can search the hashtag #SaltBae (saltbae!). visit the Twitter Moments collection, or check out some of the Tweets below:
