Earlier this year, Siemens quietly started building a new digital services center for its building technology division in Austin, and the company announced this week that it has already hired nearly 130 workers for the center.
Austin was picked by Siemens as the site for the digital center because of the available talent in the metro area, said Marcus Boerkei, head of the Americas Digital Services Center in Austin.
“Austin has quite a startup culture, it’s a very innovative city,” Boerkei said. Siemens is hoping some of that entrepreneurial spirit rubs off on Siemens, he said.
Although the company has hired most of the 130 employees it needed to staff its digital hub in Austin, Boerkei said the company is planning for more growth.
The digital services center is part of Siemens' growing technology division. Boerkei said the focus is on helping customers get the most of their most valuable asset: their buildings.
“It’s really our mission to improve the building performance and make those building environments work better for our customers,” Boerkei said. “The way to do this is using data.”
The people working in this digital hub will take data gleaned from thousands of inter-connected devices and use software to uncover operational or energy effiencies in the data.
Boerkei said the aim is to automate more building-management workflows so that over time buildings are run without much human interference.
The type of jobs that Siemens hired to staff its center include software developers, data analysts and people with IT or cybersecurity experience.
Siemens’ digital services center is 34,000 square feet and is located off Bee Caves Road.
Siemens has other facilities in Austin. A spokeswoman said the company employs about 300 people in Austin.
In addition to the digital service center, Siemens has more than 100 employees in Austin support its Digital Factory business — which works on hardware and software products — and 50 in its mobility division. The company also has employees supporting corporate functions and energy management in Austin.
Siemens Corporation is a U.S. subsidiary of Siemens AG, a Germany-based corporation with more than $88 billion in annual revenue and 350,000 employees worldwide.
