Car-sharing company car2go, which has its North American headquarters in Austin, is moving into a new downtown-area office at 901 E. 6th Street, company executives said Thursday.
The headquarters change is the latest milestone for the growing brand, which in December surpassed 1 million users in North America.
Its new 28,500 square-foot office will be part of a five-story building being developed by Endeavor Real Estate Group. Car2go said the office will open by the end of the year and has a capacity of 140 employees.
Its current headquarters is a 15,000 square-foot space along West 6th Street.
“Car2go has grown significantly over the past decade, and so has Austin,” car2go CEO Paul Delong said in a written statement. “It’s exciting to invest in a new space in the downtown core where car2go can be an even bigger part of the community.”
Car2go launched in Austin about nine years ago with blue and white Smart cars. In 2017, the company phased out the Smart cars in Austin, and now offers Mercedes-Benz GLA and CLA models. Its service, which has rental stations throughout the city with cars that can be booked through the company’s phone application, has found a niche market among tourists or those needing a car only for a short period of time.
Globally based in Germany, car2go services 25 cities, including seven in North America. The company has completed 44 million trips in North America and operates 320 cars in Austin.
