Data usage doubled in two years during SXSW, says AT&T

Posted March 22nd, 2017

AT&T users attending South by Southwest this year used more than 86.36 terabytes of data, the company said.

That’s equivalent to 247 million selfies or streaming music for 122,000 straight days.

This year’s figure is more than double the data used just two years ago. In 2015, Dallas-based AT&T reported SXSW attendees used 37 TB.

During SXSW, which ran March 10-19, AT&T said the busiest day for its network was March 17, during the music portion of the festival. (It also happened to be St. Patrick’s Day.) Data usage that day was 10.65 TB.

SXSW is one of the busiest times of the year for cellular providers, prompting them to truck in portable antennas to help boost capacity.
