Apple is coming to take your guns. But they're bringing something more colorful in exchange.
With the coming of iOS 10 this fall, the tech bellwether is replacing its pistol emoji with one of a bright green water gun, NPR reports. Apple did not mention the gun switcheroo in its statement about the emoji changes, focusing instead on new icons of minorities and women.
According to NPR:
The pistol emoji has caused trouble in recent years. Last year, a 12-year-old child in Virginia was charged with a felony and fined for using the pistol emoji in an Instagram post that police said amounted to a death threat, NBC News reported. A Texas teenager was arrested in 2015 over what police said was a tweet that allegedly threatened officers with a gun emoji, according to Texas Monthly."
Decisions about which emojis are introduced to the graphic "language" and which get the cartoon boot are made by the Unicode Consortium, of which Apple is a member. The pistol icon, keep in mind, is still available on other platforms, including Samsung phones, Twitter, Facebook and Google, according to NPR.
